Why airline loyalty limits your travel options

Met with a new client today to talk about booking a dream Europe trip using points and miles. ✈️ Here's the exciting part — they're sitting on more than one million miles! 🎉

The catch? Every single one of those miles is with American Airlines, which significantly narrows the options.

Here's what we found when searching available business class seats to Europe on the American Airlines site: prices ranged from 57,500 to a jaw-dropping 443,000 miles each way. 😬 Those lower-end seats often came with two stops and limited availability, while the best flights were sitting at the top of that range. Not ideal.

This is the reality of putting all your eggs in one airline's basket. When you're locked into a single carrier, you're at the mercy of whatever they decide to offer — and the sweet spots can be few and far between.

The good news? There's a smarter way to build your points stash. 💡 Flexible points currencies like Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou, American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt, or Capital One Miles give you real options. You can book directly through their travel portals OR transfer to dozens of airlines and hotels — whichever gives you the best value for your specific trip.

Flexibility really is everything when it comes to points. 🙌

The best offer out there right now, the Chase Sapphire Reserve is offering 150,000 bonus points to new cardholders, and this is one worth paying attention to. We have heard this offer is ending soon.

Here's what the current offer looks like:

Spend $6,000 in the first 3 months and you'll earn 150,000 bonus points. Those points are conservatively valued at around $2,500 — but depending on how you redeem them, (transfer to a dozen different airlines and several hotel chains including Hyatt) they can stretch significantly further.

The annual fee is $795, which I know sounds steep. But before you close the tab, take a look at what's included:

  • ✈️ $300 Travel Credit
  • 🎟️ $300 StubHub Credit
  • 🍽️ $300 Dining Credit
  • 🏨 $500 Edit Hotels Credit
  • 🏨 $250 Select Chase Hotels Credit
  • 🛂 $120 Global Entry Credit
  • 🚗 $10/month Lyft Credit
  • 🛵 $25/month DoorDash Credit
  • 🎵 Complimentary Apple TV+ & Apple Music
  • 🚴 $120 Peloton Credit
  • 🛋️ Priority Pass Lounge Access (you + 2 guests)
  • 🛋️ Sapphire Lounge Access

If you actually use these credits, the math works strongly in your favor. That said, it does take some intentionality to make sure you're not leaving value on the table — this card rewards people who engage with it.

If this card seems like too much, the Chase Sapphire Preferred is a great flexible travel card. The annual fee is just $95 and the bonus is 75,000 points for a $5,000 minimum spend.

If this fits how you already travel — or how you want to travel — it's a genuinely strong offer. Hit the link below to apply through my referral link, and feel free to reach out with any questions!

Southwest Just Dropped Some of the Biggest Card Bonuses We've Seen — But There's a Deadline

If you've been on the fence about a Southwest credit card, this weekend's bonus announcements might be the push you needed. We're talking large point bonuses with surprisingly low minimum spend requirements — and a clear path toward the Southwest Companion Pass in the process. ✈️

The Companion Pass Angle 🙌

Any one of these cards paired with a Southwest business credit card gets you enough points to earn the Companion Pass — valid for the rest of 2026 and all of 2027. That means a designated travel companion flies with you for free (just paying taxes and fees) on every flight you book during that window. The value adds up fast.

Before You Apply — Check These Two Things

  • You must not have received a Southwest card bonus in the past 24 months
  • You can only hold one Southwest personal card at a time

Both rules are firm, so double-check before you apply.

This offer runs through July 1st. If you're ready to move forward, use our referral link to apply. 💳

La Guardia Got a Glow-Up — And the Chase Sapphire Lounge Is Worth the Detour

La Guardia Got a Glow-Up — And the Chase Sapphire Lounge Is Worth the Detour

Let's be honest: La Guardia used to be the airport everyone complained about. Not anymore. The redesigned LGA is genuinely impressive, and the Chase Sapphire Lounge takes it up another level. ✨

The lounge is a perk for Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders — and right now the card is offering a 150,000 bonus point welcome offer that's hard to ignore.

👉Hot Tip: Chase Sapphire Preferred card holders get one FREE pass per year to the Sapphire Lounge.

What's Inside 👀

The two-story space is built around a circular bar and packed with seating options — tables, couches, tucked-away nooks, phone booths, and fireplace seating. The vibe is polished without being stuffy.

Here's what's included:

  • Free cocktails and an oat milk latte situation that actually delivers ☕
  • Buffet-style food plus order-to-your-table service
  • A faux fireplace (surprisingly cozy)
  • And yes — free facials 🧖

👉Hot tip on the facials: scan the QR code at your table the moment you sit down and book a slot immediately. Appointments run every 15 minutes and the facial itself is 30 minutes, so a little advance planning goes a long way. Don't wait until you've had two cocktails and suddenly remember.

The cardholder can also bring in two guests for free — making it genuinely useful for couples or travel companions. 🙌

Where to Find It

Sapphire Lounges currently operate at JFK, La Guardia, Boston, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and San Diego, with Los Angeles and Dallas coming soon.

Getting to the LGA lounge requires a little navigation — the Terminal B map is not your friend. Head toward the Brooklyn Diner or gates 31–49, take the elevator down to the first floor, follow the hallway, and you're there. Worth the mild scavenger hunt.

If this lounge fits your regular travel routes, the 150,000-point welcome offer on the Sapphire Reserve is a solid reason to take another look at the card. 💳

Full disclosure: I have a complicated history with this card after last year's refresh (you can read about that here), but I also just used it for a nearly free Las Vegas weekend in January 🎰 — so clearly we've worked things out.

🚨 Chase Just Raised the Sapphire Reserve Welcome Bonus to 150,000 Points!

🚨 Chase Just Raised the Sapphire Reserve Welcome Bonus to 150,000 Points!

Chase quietly made a big move — the Chase Sapphire Reserve is now offering 150,000 bonus points to new cardholders, and this is one worth paying attention to.

A few things to know before you apply:

You can hold both the Sapphire Preferred and the Sapphire Reserve at the same time. However, if you've received a welcome bonus on either personal Sapphire card in the past 48 months, you likely won't qualify for this one. The good news? Chase will show you an eligibility pop-up before the hard credit pull, so you'll know where you stand before anything hits your credit report. 👍

How To Get A Southwest Companion Pass Fast

Southwest is back with another fast track to a Companion Pass 🎉

This time, you only need one Southwest personal credit card. Meet the minimum spend, and you’ll earn a Companion Pass valid through February 28, 2027 — plus a stash of Rapid Rewards points.

The exact bonus and spending requirement depend on which card you choose (details below). But first, a quick refresher.

The Southwest Companion Pass is one of the strongest perks in domestic travel. It’s essentially a buy-one-get-one benefit: when you book a paid or award ticket with Southwest Airlines, your companion flies for just the taxes and fees. There are no blackout dates, and you can use it as often as you want. You’re also allowed to change your designated companion up to three times per calendar year.

Normally, you’d need to earn 135,000 Rapid Rewards points in a single calendar year to qualify. This offer shortcuts that requirement.

I’ve used the Companion Pass to offset the cost of college visits, family trips, and quick weekend getaways — it adds up quickly. ✈️

Here’s how the current card options compare:

Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card

  • Companion Pass valid through February 28, 2027

  • 20,000 bonus points

  • $3,000 minimum spend

  • $99 annual fee

Key perks:

  • First checked bag free

  • Complimentary standard seat within 48 hours of departure

  • 10% promo code

  • 3,000 anniversary points

Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card

  • Companion Pass valid through February 28, 2027

  • 30,000 bonus points

  • $4,000 minimum spend

  • $149 annual fee

Key perks:

  • First checked bag free

  • Complimentary preferred seat within 48 hours of departure

  • 15% promo code

  • 6,000 anniversary points

Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card

  • Companion Pass valid through February 28, 2027

  • 40,000 bonus points

  • $5,000 minimum spend

  •  $229 annual fee

Key perks:

  • First checked bag free

  • Complimentary preferred seat at booking

  • Extra legroom seat within 48 hours of departure

  • 7,500 anniversary points

A few important notes before you apply:

  • You’re only eligible for a personal card welcome bonus once every 24 months, so double-check your timeline.

  • Make sure a Companion Pass valid through early 2027 fits your travel plans. In some cases, it may make more sense to pursue the traditional Companion Pass strategy, which can stretch benefits close to two full years depending on timing.

If you already have trips in mind for 2026 and early 2027, this is a straightforward way to lock in significant savings. 💙

Want more personal help using points and miles for almost FREE travel? I can plan your entire trip using your points and miles or offer a 30 minute consult to answer questions or you can  download my ebook, custom tracker or Join my Travel Coaching Program.

Right now, you can use the promo code "FREETRAVEL" to get $50 off the coaching program. I would love to help you make priceless family memories affordable.

A Change to Capital One Venture X Lounge Access 😕

Priority Pass lounge in Las Palmas, Canary Islands

And now for a bit of disappointing news ✈️

As of February 1, Capital One Venture X removed complimentary lounge access for authorized users 😥

Previously, authorized users could access:

  • Capital One Lounges in Denver, Las Vegas, Washington DC (Dulles and Reagan), JFK, and Dallas

  • Priority Pass lounges worldwide

That perk is now gone for authorized users, and guest access is more limited as well.

Capital One Lounge Denver

Why I’m Still Keeping the Card 💳

Even with this change, I’m holding onto my Venture X. The math still works:

  • $395 annual fee

  • $300 annual travel credit

  • 10,000 anniversary bonus miles (worth about $100)

That essentially offsets the annual fee.

On top of that:

  • All purchases earn 2x points

  • It pairs well with other cards for everyday spending

  • Transfer partners are strong

  • The travel eraser makes using points simple and flexible

Still, the loss of lounge access for authorized users—and tighter guest rules—is frustrating. Some cardholders are hoping this leads to shorter lounge lines 🤞, but that remains to be seen.

So What Are Your Options Now? 🧳

If you travel with authorized users or guests, here’s what you can do:

1. Buy lounge access for authorized users
You can add annual lounge access for authorized users for $125 per person.
I plan to do this for my three kids, but the nice part is you don’t have to activate it right away—so you can wait until they actually need it.
To add this, log into your account and select “Manage Users.”

2. Pay per visit for guests
If someone is traveling with you:

  • $45 per adult

  • $25 per child

  • Kids under 2 are free 👶

3. Have your travel partner apply for their own Venture X
If your partner applies for their own card:

  • You can earn 10,000 bonus miles with a referral 🎉

  • They’ll get their own lounge access, no guest fees required

While this change definitely takes away some of the shine, the Venture X can still make sense—especially if you value simple earning, flexible points, and strong travel credits.

Right now, you can use the promo code "FREETRAVEL" to get $50 off the coaching program. I would love to help you make priceless family memories affordable.

*For every new client, we will donate 10% of the proceeds to one of our favorite charities.

How To Make Travel Chaos Easier On You

 Quick flight home

✈️ from San Francisco this week turned into travel weather chaos ⛈️but I learned a few things that helped me navigate the changes more quickly.

I was notified of the changes for my Alaska Airlines flight through email, but there was a serious lag. I was actually sent a free $50 airport voucher for food and drinks BEFORE I found out my flight was delayed. That's when I decided to check the board to confirm the delay and saw my flight was actually cancelled. Hmmmm.

The app and flightaware.com still showed the flight delayed.
The Alaska Lounge rep told me to head to the Alaska service center, but the line was 50 deep so I hopped on the app.
The app immediately offered me several alternative flights to cities within 70 miles of my intended destination. I could check the flight board at the airport to see if those alternative flights were still taking off and I was able to rebook myself on an American Airlines flight leaving in an hour. Alaska even refunded 8,000 points when I booked the new flight.
That American Airlines flight ended up getting delayed as well, but I still departed that night instead of spending the night in San Francisco.
While I was changing flights, I was trying to help a woman in the service center line, but she had not downloaded the app and didn't have her confirmation code or loyalty number so we were not having much success. The Alaska rep ended up rebooking her on a flight leaving the next day and she was forced to pay for a hotel near the SFO airport. Sidenote, she had also checked her bag and could not get it back. Bummer.

I had access to both the Alaska Lounge with the Atmos Summit credit card lounge passes and The Club at SFO through Priority Pass with my Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card.

I was disappointed with the food at the Alaska Lounge though the Whiskey Sour welcome drink was pretty tasty!

There was a waiting list for The Club at SFO so I spent the $50 voucher from Alaska on a sandwich, yogurt and protein bar from one of the restaurants. Since I still had a balance available, I bought some chocolate and pretzels. The credit showed up instantly on my credit card.

Then I got off the waitlist at The Club and my flight got delayed again so I went in and found a quiet place to work.

So lessons learned from this experience:

✅Always download the app for the airline you are traveling with. I was able to rebook myself from a cancelled Alaska flight to an American flight on the app and skip waiting in the huge line. The Alaska rep was surprised! She could only rebook on Alaska flights and Alaska refunded my miles thru the app
✅Check your credit card benefits, Atmos Summit sent me a $50 voucher to use in the airport during the delay
✅Lounge access is awesome🍷a welcome drink and free food makes the delay much easier
✅Be flexible. I ended up flying to LA and renting a car for $32 instead of spending the night in a hotel
✅Another reason not to check bags. My carryon stayed with me.

The flight cancellation notice from Alaska Airlines eventually came through and cited Air Traffic Control Restrictions as the reason for cancellation. Since I did have to rent a car and pay for a half tank of gas, I filed a claim with Alaska Airlines. Stayed posted to see if I get reimbursed. If I had paid for my flight or just the taxes with my Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card, I could have filed a claim with Chase under trip delay reimbursement. But since I used my Atmos Summit credit card to pay the $6 taxes for this flight, I was awarded the $50 trip delay voucher to use in the airport.
