Book Now Southwest San Diego To Hawaii Non Stop

Even though flights won't start until April from San Diego direct to Hawaii, tickets went on sale today! Woohoo! 

When Southwest launched flights to Hawaii earlier this year, the only direct flights from California were from Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco. 

So although it was nice and inexpensive, it was super inconvenient for those of us in Southern California. 

Starting in April 2020, you will be able to fly from San Diego to Hawaii directly. 

Booking opened today for flights through June 6, 2020 and even if you are just thinking about it, book tickets now and then cancel if you change your mind. Southwest has no cancellation fee and makes it super easy to change flights or get a refund entirely. 

I entered some random dates for April 2020 and the flight search tool came up with one flight per day direct San Diego to Maui priced at $159 and $129 each way. Pretty sweet! If you have the points, it's just 8,188 points each way. Plus if you have the companion pass, that's just $143 round trip per person. Wow! I tried searching Honolulu as well and came up with an even better deal. One non stop per day each way priced at $129. 
But jump on this quickly, since we saw prices climb fast when  Southwest launched. The easiest way to earn Southwest points is to open a Southwest credit card, here's my referral link if you need it.

How To Visit Expensive Jackson Hole On A Budget

         This past summer, we spent a week visiting the National Parks in Montana and Wyoming. Think Glacier National Park, Yellowstone, and the Grand Tetons. Absolutely beautiful. But wow, expensive. And Jackson Hole, Wyoming has been named the most unaffordable place to live in the entire US. 
         So what's a family of five supposed to do? I checked the chains in the area to see if we could use award points, all sold out. Argh. If you get lucky, there is a Hampton Inn and Suites, Super 8, Motel 6 and another Hilton in Jackson. The area is divided into Jackson Hole and Teton Village. The better ski area according to the locals is at Teton Village, but the town is in Jackson Hole. Teton Village feels very much like a small resort at the bottom of the ski run. 
I checked airbnb.com, but the rates were outrageous. So then I searched hostels and bam, I found The Hostel in Teton Village. 
Now, I stayed at plenty of hostels back in my 20's when I backpacked across Europe. But I never thought about staying at a hostel with my family. 
But guess what, we loved it.

The Hostel is located right at the bottom of the ski run next to the Four Seasons. Yep, right next door. But we paid $130 per night for a room for five people. I am pretty sure you would not be able to stay in the closet at the Four Seasons for that price. 
The Hostel had FREE coffee, tea, and hot chocolate plus a pool table, access to a shared refrigerator, laundry facilities and a lounge. There were also barbecues available. They stated that they had kitchen facilities as well, but all we saw was a camping stove. 
The room was small, but we had a private bathroom and fresh linens. 
It felt safe. There were lots of families and kids. In the winter, they had places to store your skis, snowboards, and boots. The rooms did not have air conditioning, but do have heat. 
We picked up breakfast items, sandwich items at the Albertsons in Jackson and a pizza to go for dinner.

Activities we enjoyed included river rafting with Lewis and Clark down the Snake River. We paid $450 for this tour, but erased it with our Capital One Venture card points. 

Plus we took the boat across Jenni Lake (no reservations needed, boats depart every 15 minutes) and hiked a few miles to Inspiration Point and saw moose! Definitely a highlight of the trip.

The Virginia Diner had a great Wyoming breakfast with fresh biscuits for $10 per person. 

We liked The Hostel so much that we are going to try staying at another one in Patagonia, Chile next year.

US Bans All Flights To Cuba Except To Havana

Unfortunately, your chance to visit Cuba is coming to an end. The US announced on Friday that all commercial flights to cities besides Havana must be canceled within 45 days. This is due to increasing tension between the two governments due to Cuba's support of the Venezuelan leader. 

The request came from the Department of State, according to a notice posted by the Department of Transportation. Pompeo wrote "that banning travel to the majority of Cuba will strengthen economic consequences to the Cuban regime."

Jet Blue and American are the only two airlines affected. Southwest had already canceled flights due to poor demand. Both airlines say they will comply with the new policy. Nine Cuban cities will be affected. 

If you have a flight booked already that may be affected, call the airline immediately. 

You can still travel to Havana and I highly recommend it. Cuba is an amazing country with fantastic people who saw an opportunity open in 2016 under former President Obama and are now seeing it fade away.

Reason #100 Why You Need Global Entry/TSA Precheck

       The holiday travel season is right around the corner, yep, think turkey, trees and holiday travel. The countdown is on. So here is reason #100 why you need to get your family registered for TSA Precheck and Global Entry. 
        It's way less hassle! 
        I'll be honest, I had my doubts. But since I opened several credit cards earlier this year, I was able to get three of us TSA Precheck/Global Entry for FREE so why not. 
        And wow! But to be honest on our last trip to the National Parks, the TSA Precheck line at security wasn't all that much shorter than the regular line, BUT just the fact that I didn't have to remove my laptop or my shoes or my toiletries made it all worth it. 

        On top of all that, I am one of those people that security just loves to hassle. I assume that security will go through my suitcase, ask me to step aside for secondary, fingerprint me or use a wand. It happens every time. Sometimes they don't like my ground coffee and french press (I don't leave home without these). Sometimes, they are suspicious of my fiber supplement powder. Sometimes, they don't like my snacks. One time, they took my nail scissors. Another time, they took my ice pack. Sometimes, I just get randomly selected for the dusting of the fingers or to get scanned or they want to check my armpits. It's always something. It's so routine I plan for it.

       But on our last trip, my first with TSA Precheck, I flew through security. I even asked someone if they were sure they didn't want to check me or my suitcase. Nope, they said, you are fine. 
       Wow! Now I will try Global Entry on my trip to the UK coming up next month so I'll let you know how that goes. 
       But you need to get this process going now because you have to apply online and then go to the airport for an interview. By the way, TSA Precheck costs $85 and TSA Precheck with Global Entry costs $100 and since you will have $100 credit, you might as well do both. TSA Precheck is for the domestic security and Global Entry is for customs when you fly internationally or cross by car or foot into Canada or Mexico. 

 Here is the application process:

1. Create an account at fsa.gov. The account creation process is a bit tricky due to their security codes, but be patient. 
2. Fill out the application. You can use your credit for anyone just remember to pay with that credit card. Once you get notified that you are pending approval, you can schedule an interview. 
3. Bring your passport and ID to the interview and don't be late. 
4. They will mail you your Global Entry card, but you will get your known traveler number immediately. 

If you have previously booked tickets, you will need to add the number manually to each reservation, but then you can add it to your profile. 

TSA Precheck/Global Entry costs $100, but it's FREE every 4-5 years if you have the following cards:

• Capital One Venture 
• Chase Southwest Performance Business card 
• Chase Sapphire Reserve
• Chase IHG
• United Explorer card 
• Citi Advantage Executive card 

 So good luck and happy holiday travel! 

How To Get The Southwest Companion Pass For Two Years!

Niagara Falls is crazy amazing AND it's even better when you and your family fly for FREE! I have had the Southwest companion pass (buy 1 flight, get a companion ticket FREE) for the past five years. It is one of the most valuable perks around and has saved me thousands of dollars. Besides Niagara Falls, I have used it to take two kids college shopping in the midwest and on the east coast, my husband and I went to Cuba, I am heading to New Orleans next month, my daughter and I went to New York twice, I took my daughter to see National Parks, we went to Seattle, Washington DC and probably more trips that I can't remember right now. 

So to get the full two years of companion travel, now is the perfect time to apply for Southwest credit cards. 

But be very careful to reach your minimum spend after January 1st, 2020. 

If you reach your minumum spend on December 31st, 2019, your bonus points will count in the 2019 calendar year and you will only get the companion pass for one year. If you reach your minimum spend on January 1st, 2020, your bonus will count in 2020 and you will get the companion pass for 2020 and 2021, two full years! 

So apply now, spend close to your minimum spend, but do not reach it until 2020. 

In order to earn the companion pass, you must earn 110,000 Southwest points in a single calendar year so the closer you can do it to the beginning of the year, the longer you have the companion pass.

If you don't have any Southwest credit cards yet, then apply for one personal card and one business card. That will give you 100,000-120,000 points depending on which business card you choose. 

The new offer for all personal Southwest credit cards is:

•  40,000 points for spending just $1,000 in the first 3 months 
• 20,000 bonus points when you spend $12,000 in the first year

You can only hold one personal Southwest credit card at a time. The cards are the:

Southwest Priority - best deal!

• $149 annual fee for the first year
• $75 Southwest credit 
• 7,500 anniversary points annually
• 2x on Southwest purchases
• 1x on everything else

Southwest Premier

• $99 annual fee
• 6,000 anniversary points annually

Southwest Announces Increase In Points Needed For CP

One of the best perks in the points/miles game is the Southwest Companion Pass. It's buy 1, get 1 FREE on any Southwest flight for two years. Wow! 

This morning, Southwest announced that starting Jan. 1, 2020, you will need to earn 125,000 points in a calendar year to earn the pass. That's an increase of 15,000 points from the current offer. 

Yes, that's a bummer, but with the increased offers on credit cards, it's still very doable. Plus there are other lots of other ways to earn Southwest points without flying. 

On the positive side, Southwest also announced that points will never expire starting in 2020. 

Watch for my post coming up about how to time your earning for the companion pass so that you get the pass for two years instead of just one. 

Southwest 80,000 Point Bonus May Be Ending Wednesday

We found other links that do not show an expiration date, but who knows. If this offer ends on Wednesday, we do not know what the new offer will look like, but 80,000 points is a huge bonus.

Last Day To Get Huge IHG Bonus!

Wednesday, October 9th is the last day to apply for the IHG Premier Rewards credit card and get a 125,000 bonus. This is a great deal if you think you might use IHG hotel stays.

For families, most Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites include hot breakfast. This can be a huge savings for families. 
Plus a family of 5 or 6 can stay in one room in Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites. 

This credit card does fall under the 5/24 rule. Chase limits you to applying to 5 credit cards in 24 months. There are a few that do not count under this rule including some business credit cards, but most of Chase' credit cards are affected.

5 Secrets In Yellowstone National Park That You Don't Want To Miss

         Yellowstone National Park includes 2.2 million acres and is the size of two states. There are thousands of hiking trails, hundreds of bison, millions of tourists, dozens of geysers, paint pots and waterfalls.
So where do you start, how do you avoid the crowds and where can you go off the beaten path?
          

Boiling River, Natural Hot Spring

Here are 5 secret spots you won't want to miss:

1. Boiling River - Natural hot springs. Drive through the north entrance and about a mile past Mammoth Hot Springs until you see two parking lots. You can park in either, but you will end up walking to the end of the lot on the north side of the road. Walk past the sign so you are following the path along the river. This is where the Mammoth Hot Springs dumps into the Yellowstone River. 
It's about a 3/4 mile walk, wear your bathing suit, bring a towel and water shoes. There are benches for your clothes. Be super careful getting in and out. The water is a mix of very hot and very cold, the current is swift and the rocks are slippery. 
But this one is pretty awesome. It's open until 8pm.

2. Fairy Falls - The Morning Prismatic Pool is one of the highlights of the park and not to be missed. But you can't appreciate it's beauty from the boardwalk. So once you do the walk, drive about .5 mile down the road and follow the signs for Fairy Falls. Park and walk to the lookout. Amazing. 

3. Best route - Leave Gardiner by 7am and drive straight to the Midway Basin and the Morning Prismatic Pool. Walk around the pools, hike Fairy Falls, then go back the way you came and stop at the Fountain Paint Pots. Then go back to the main road and drive to Old Faithful in the lower basin. If you follow this route, you will be at least one hour ahead of the crowd.

4. Mammoth Hot Springs - Another not to be missed stop at Yellowstone. However, don't bother walking from the bottom of the springs up to the top. Instead, look at the springs from the bottom and then get back in your car and follow the road around to the top of the springs. You get a great view and can do this stop in half the time. 

5. Beehive Geyser - Old Faithful is cool, but walk around behind Old Faithful and check out Beehive Geyser. And if you happen to see it erupt, wow! Also check out the anenome pool.

Last, but not least and certainly no secret, be sure to buy an ice cream at the Yellowstone Inn located at Old Faithful. My favorite, Huckleberry, of course. 

Southwest Sale Flights Under $100

Another week, another Southwest sale. This one, Southwest is promising flights for just $49 each way between November 13th, 2019 and February 12th, 2020 between select cities. Travel to/from Puerto Rico for November 13 through December 5, 2019 and dates into 2020. International travel November 13 through December 11, 2019 and into 2020. 

A quick search showed $49 from San Diego to:

• San Jose, CA
• El Paso, TX 
• Salt Lake City, UT

And from Charleston, SC to:

It's always hit or miss with these sales, but it's worth checking cause you may get lucky. And if you have the companion pass, wow!

Flying On LATAM? Here's What You Need To Know

LATAM announced this week that it is pulling out of the OneWorld and partnership with American Airlines and joining Sky Alliance with Delta Airlines effective October 27, 2019. 

One World includes airlines like 

• Iberia
• British Airways 
• Finnair 

Sky Alliance includes airlines like

• Korean Air 
• KLM
• Air France 
• Aeromexico

            This is huge news for anyone planning trips to South America. 

American Airlines is one of the main carriers to South America and its partnership with LATAM (formerly LAN) meant you could use American miles to fly just about anywhere. 

When we went to Peru, we used American miles to fly LATAM from the US to Cusco, Lima and to Iquitos. All on points and all FREE. 

            If you have flights currently booked on LATAM, American Airlines says through its website that the ticket will be honored and no passengers should be disrupted. 

However, if you check the American website, you can no longer book codeshare flights JJ on LATAM. Too bad since flying on LATAM was like a breath of fresh air. They serve free drinks, food and the flight attendants were attentive and courteous. 

            If you were saving points now to use on American to South America, you may need to double-check your plan since some flights will be unavailable.
