#1 Way To Prepare For Southwest Changes Coming Wednesday

The day is finally arriving this Wednesday, May 28th. The end of Southwest as we know and love it. Starting this Wednesday, the FREE bag policy is ending. We anticipate that the bag charge will be approximately $35 per bag in line with other airlines.

Starting soon, you will also be choosing your seat when you book your flight. Though assigned seats do not officially start until early 2026. Travel credits will start to expire as well, but since we always fly on points, we are not worried about that.
You are probably already seeing some strange pricing happening on the Southwest website and app.

Hopefully you are taking advantage of some of the strange low fares. I snagged a 6,000 point flight from San Diego to Seattle and pair that with my companion pass and wow!

If you buy a Business Select ticket or have A List Preferred, you will still get two FREE checked bags. If you have a Southwest credit card or A List, you will still get one FREE checked bag. If you follow my blog and have earned the Southwest Companion Pass, then you have at least one Southwest Credit Card. Your companion will also get a FREE checked bag.

But since you won't get two FREE checked bags, what's the #1 way to prepare for these changes?

#1 is to stop traveling with checked bags. #teamcarryon all the way. Southwest will still allow a FREE carry on and a FREE personal item.
If you are saying right now, there is no way I can fit all my stuff in just a carry on, I'm here to help you.

There are a few methods like 5-4-3-2-1 (5 shirts, 4 pants, 3 shoes, 2 dresses, 1 accessory), but I follow the pack for approximately 7-10 days no matter how long you plan to travel. You can always do laundry.
You can check out this video to see how I pack my carry on. You will note that I take along a French press too.

I also bought this nifty personal size backpack that fits under the seat, but holds an extraordinary amount of stuff. You can find it on Amazon for $36.99 in all different colors.

Bottom line, change is part of life, but the challenge is to find the best value.

As always, if you need more guidance, please join our Travel Coaching Program, you can find out more about our personal coaching here. Use FREETRAVEL for $50 off the cost. Or you can book a 30 minute consult for just $100. We would love to help you!

How To Visit National Parks With Points and Miles

Feeling uneasy about traveling internationally right now, there are so many beautiful places to visit right here in the US including National Parks. And yes, you can use points and miles to visit them.

Recently, I visited Joshua Tree National Park, it is the 6th most visited park in the US with 3 million visitors every year. The park is located approximately 45 minutes from Palm Springs in the Hi Desert.

The top 10 most popular National Parks are: Great Smoky Mountains, Grand Canyon, Zion, Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, Yosemite, Acadia, Grand Teton, Joshua Tree and Olympic.

And those are just the most popular ones. Some of the smaller yet amazing National Parks include: Canyonlands, Lassen Volcanic, Big Bend, Channel Islands and North Cascades. 332 million people visit the National Parks each year.

You will need to pay the entry for each park so if you plan to visit 2-3 of them, you should look into purchasing the America The Beautiful annual pass for $80. For seniors, it's just $20 for an annual pass and $80 for a lifetime pass. The pass is FREE for military and fourth graders and their families.

You could pay a lot to stay inside some of the parks OR there are a handful of hotel chains that are typically located just outside the entrances to the parks. Those chains include Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott, Holiday Inn Express by IHG and Sure Stay Plus by Best Western. These hotels usually qualify for FREE night certificates like Marriott's FREE night for 35,000 points. In addition, Holiday Inn is a stay 3, get the 4th night FREE and Marriott is stay 4, get the 5th night FREE.

If there is no chain near the entrance or you don't have a FREE night certificate, you can also look in the Chase Travel Portal or the Capital One Travel Portal or you can "erase" the hotel with your Capital One Venture credit card.

For Joshua Tree National Park, I used a FREE night certificate to stay at the Fairfield Inn and Suites in Twenty Nine Palms. It is located about seven minutes outside the park entrance. There is a grocery store across the street from the hotel and a few restaurants nearby including a Chipotle and Starbucks. I prefer the Fairfield Inn and Suites hotels because the rooms can accommodate up to 6 people, there is a pool and includes breakfast.

Most of these parks are located within driving distance from a city where Southwest flies so you can use points and your Southwest Companion Pass. For example, Joshua Tree National Park is approximately 30 minutes from Palm Springs, 1.5 hours from Ontario Airport and 2.5 hours from Los Angeles, Burbank, John Wayne Airport and San Diego.

Yellowstone is located a few hours from Salt Lake City and Boise, Idaho. Yosemite is located a few hours from Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and Fresno. The Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce are located a few hours from Las Vegas. You can also fly into Phoenix to visit the Grand Canyon.

The biggest expense with a National Park trip is usually renting a car, but if you charge this purchase to your
Capital One Venture or Venture X credit card, you get rental insurance and can "erase" the purchase with points. Right now, the Capital One Venture credit card is offering 100,000 bonus points through my special link. You might also try booking your rental car through the Chase or Capital One Travel portal, but I usually find Costco has better rates.

One of my clients told me she finds great rates through airline offers when she books her flights. But however you make the reservation, be sure to pay for the rental car with a credit card that earns bonus points for travel. Or use a credit card that you are working to earn a bonus offer like the Chase Sapphire Preferred 100,000 point offer or that you can erase the rental with points.

Food options can be limited near the National Parks so it's a good idea to carry a cooler with you and stop at a grocery store on the way. Keep plenty of water with you as well since many of the parks can be hot and have long lines during the busy season.

Some of the parks like Joshua Tree National Park offer ranger tours like the one I took to Keys Ranch, an original homestead inside the park. We spent two hours in a private area inside the park that is only accessible on the tour. The original house, equipment and cars are on the property and Ranger Tom had lots of stories about the miners and park back in the 1930's. The tour is only available October - April and costs $20 per person.

If you are looking to stay closer to home or in the US this summer, National Parks offer a great escape from the city and are super affordable with points and miles.

Just Got Word....My Favorite Card Is Ending It's 100,000 Bonus Offer Soon 💗

Just got word that the 100,000 bonus point offer on the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card will be ending soon. We don't know when soon is, but if you are thinking about this one. Do not wait!

This my favorite card and Chase Ultimate Rewards are my favorite points.

Just Got Word....My Favorite Card Is Ending It's 100,000 Bonus Offer Soon 💗

What can you do with 100,000 Chase points? Here are some real examples:

  • I flew from Athens to LAX for 15,000 Chase points + $90 taxes
  • My daughter and I flew from LAX to Medellin, Colombia for 54,000 Chase points round trip booked in the Chase Travel Portal.
  • I could transfer the points 1:1 to dozens of airlines including Southwest Airlines, what could you do with 100,000 Southwest points? How about 5 round trip flights to New York? Add the Southwest companion pass and wow!
  • I could transfer those points to Hyatt and stay at the Hyatt Regency Maui or Hyatt Vacation Club Ka'anapali for four nights.

  • Go off peak and stay at the Hyatt Place Waikiki and you could stretch those points to 7 nights FREE.

Great News! Bilt Adds Southwest As A Transfer Partner

If you are renting, you should have a Bilt credit card! You can read all about the Bilt card here. For renters, it is a no brainer way to rack up flexible points every month. Those points can be transferred just like Chase Ultimate Reward points, Citi points, Amex points and Capital One points to dozens of airlines and hotels.

Great News! Bilt Adds Southwest As A Transfer Partner

And now Bilt has added Southwest Airlines as one of its transfer partners.
The only other flexible points you can transfer to Southwest Airlines are Chase Ultimate Reward points.
The points transfer 1:1 meaning 1 Bilt point = 1 Southwest point same as Chase Ultimate Reward points to Southwest points.

The points do not count towards the Southwest Companion Pass.

Let's say you spend $2,500 per month on rent. If you pay your rent through the
Bilt app with your Bilt credit card, you will earn $2,500 Bilt points or 2,500 Southwest points per month. You need to make at least 5 transactions per month on your Bilt credit card to qualify.

So after three months, you would have 7,500 Bilt points which you could transfer to Southwest and use them for flights like three one way flights from San Diego to San Francisco. Now that Southwest Travel Credits expire, you should always use points to buy flights. If you use points on Southwest and cancel a flight, the points are returned to your account. Southwest points never expire.

What To Do When You Get Pending On Your Credit Card Application

You press the submit button for the Southwest credit card application and the wheel starts spinning and then you get the dreaded "pending review" message. Argh.

The next message says you will receive a letter in 7-10 days regarding your application decision. Argh

What To Do When You Get Pending On Your Credit Card Application

So now what? Lately, several of my clients have received these messages and then just this week, I got them too. Argh.

But don't give up. Here's what you need to do. There are a few reasons why your credit card application may end up in review.

1. Too much credit

2. Not enough income

3. 5/24 or too many credit cards opened

Reason #1 - the easiest to reconcile. If you call the reconsideration line for the Chase Southwest credit card 888 270 2127 and 800 278 8830, the representatives will usually advise you to move credit lines around or close a few cards.

Reason #2 - you can use both your salary, your partner's salary and your business income so let the representative know that you have more income you can add to  your application.

Reason #3 - offer to close some credit cards. Never close your oldest card, but maybe some no annual fee cards that you just never got around to closing.

Then the representative will resubmit your application and you wait again.

What To Do When You Get Pending On Your Credit Card Application

Right now, you can get 50,000 - 80,000 Southwest points for opening a personal or business credit card. You can only hold one personal Southwest credit card at a time, but you can actually hold both business cards.

You can read here about the easiest way to earn the Southwest Companion Pass which is BOGO flights for up to two years. It's the best travel perk around and the way things are going with changes to Southwest, it may not be around forever.

Join my Travel Coaching Program and we will design your personal strategy to travel for almost FREE and guide you through the process. Right now, you can use the promo code "FREETRAVEL" to get $50 off the program. I would love to help you make priceless family memories affordable.

Why Southwest's Big Changes Don't Matter To Me

I'm seeing that a lot of people are very angry and upset over Southwest Airlines big announcement regarding baggage fees and the way we earn points when we fly.

Why Southwest's Big Changes Don't Matter To Me

Southwest announced that they are joining other airlines and starting May 2025 will be charging for checked bags. We don't know the price yet, but the going rate is $35 per bag. Only A-List and Business Select fares will get two FREE checked bags.

If you are a Southwest credit card holder, you will also get a FREE checked bag. Right now, you can apply for any Southwest personal credit card and get 30,000 bonus points plus a companion pass valid through February 28, 2026. This is a good offer, but I can show you how to get 135,000 points and the companion pass for almost two years in my Travel Coaching Program. Bonus, anyone on your reservation including your companion on your pass will get their own FREE checked bag.

Southwest announced that it is modifying how many points you earn when you fly. In fact, this started already on March 4th 2025.

Why Southwest's Big Changes Don't Matter To Me

But for me and my clients in the Travel Coaching Program, these changes don't matter much. Let me tell you why.

First, we don't check luggage. Yes, I know sometimes, you have to if you are moving a child across the country or moving things to other places. But in general, we believe that traveling lighter is better. So we are on TEAM CARRYON all the way. In fact, we recently tried traveling to a conference with just a personal item. You can read about that adventure here. And if you really need a checked bag, don't worry. Since we help our clients earn a Southwest Companion Pass, the best travel perk around, that would equal two FREE bags. You are right, it's still less than the four bags you get currently, but it's more than zero.

Second, we don't pay cash for flights. Period. As a rule, we also don't earn points for flying on Southwest because we fly for FREE. So whether passengers earn 2 points per mile or 6 points per mile, it doesn't matter to us since we don't earn any points when we fly. We earn points in different ways.

If you are interested in learning more about how we earn points and fly for FREE or how to earn the Southwest Companion Pass, check out my Travel Coaching Program. I would love to meet you!

New Southwest Companion Pass Credit Card Offer

Southwest is out with a new one year companion pass offer. The companion pass is the best deal for domestic travel. It is BOGO flights on Southwest Airlines as many times as you want for up to two years. You can also change your companion up to three times.

Normally, you need to earn 135,000 points in a calendar year to earn the pass. But now Southwest is offering a companion pass and 30,000 points with a single credit card application for their personal credit card. You need to spend a minimum of $4,000 in three months on any one of their three personal credit cards. The companion pass expires Feb. 28, 2026.

Remember you can only hold one personal Southwest credit card at a time. These are the three personal credit cards and their benefits.

If you plan to hop on this offer, my recommendation is the Southwest Priority. It does carry the highest annual fee, but it comes with a $75 Southwest credit. So that. means it's really the same as the Plus. The credit can be used for upgraded boardings, taxes, fees, and flights. Just use the card to make the purchase and the credit will show up on your statement.

In my travel coaching program, I actually recommend a different way to get the companion pass for almost two years and 135,000 points. And even with this offer on the table, I would still recommend it. You would only spend another $2,000 for the minimum spend, but you would earn an extra 105,000 points.

If you would like to join my travel coaching program, you can use this link.   I would love to help you and your family travel for almost FREE. Use the promo code FREETRAVEL for $50 off.

Lessons Learned From My 2024 Year End Summary

Even though it is already February, I wanted to share my 2024 year end summary. I recommend to all my clients to do a year in review to see what points they used,  how they used them and look for trends.
This exercise will help you in planning your travel goals for the next year.

During the January live group coaching session last month, we did this exercise as a group. One of my clients completed the task and said

"Wow! I knew we saved a lot of money this year by using points, but until I did this exercise, I didn't realize how much."

Amazing!

Lessons Learned From My 2024 Year End Summary

I do the same exercise with my own points and miles journey because we are always learning. So when I look at the above summary, here are some things I notice:

Lessons Learned From My 2024 Year End Summary

Reflecting on how I used points and miles this past year for travel:

What will I do differently or improve for 2025? I would like to keep better track of the benefits and FREE nights that come with my cards. I just realized that Lyft Pink membership comes with my Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card and would have saved me $150. I also ended the year with one FREE night at an IHG hotel that almost expired without being used.

Step #1 Towards Earning Your Southwest Companion Pass For 2025-26

It's the countdown towards earning the Southwest Companion Pass for 2025-26, yep, almost two full years. And I have challenged myself to help 25 people earn the pass. If you are ready, sign up here!  There is no cost to you, my coaching is totally FREE.

Just in case you don't know what the pass is all about, here's a quick summary:

  • The Southwest Companion Pass is a BOGO flight pass for any flight, anywhere, anytime for you and one companion. No blackout dates, no restrictions.
American Airlines, British Airways, Aer Lingus and Delta Airlines offer a slightly different variation on the companion pass, but again it's just valid for one flight per year and costs up to $99.

  • Southwest is the ONLY airline that offers a companion pass for unlimited flights for up to two full years, it's an incredible deal.

I have had the pass for 8 years and I estimate it has saved me thousands of dollars. I have used it to fly to Cuba, Costa Rica, Washington DC, New York, Puerto Rico, Florida, North Carolina, Washington State, Nashville, Chicago and so much more.

  • Southwest allows you to change your companion three times per calendar year. And your companion can be a partner, child, friend, family member or anyone else you would like to bring with you.

So whether you have had the pass before or you are planning to earn it for the first time, let's talk about what we need to do now to get ready. You can also sign up to be one of the 25 people I am going to help for FREE to earn the pass.

Step #1 Towards Earning Your Southwest Companion Pass For 2025-26

In very simple terms, in order to get the pass, we need to earn 135,000 Southwest points in a single calendar year. Once you earn the points, the companion pass will show up in your Southwest account and you can start using it immediately. The pass is good for the calendar year you earn it and the following year. Which means that if you earn the pass in January 2025, it is good for the rest of 2025 and 2026.
That's the reason why we try to earn the pass as early in the year as possible.

But if you are earning the pass for a second or third time or if you have received a Southwest credit card bonus before, you need to check a few things before you get started.

1. IMPORTANT - Check the date that you last earned a Southwest point bonus. You can do that by logging into your Southwest account and checking your reward activity. You can see when I check my account, I earned a business card bonus in January 2023 and a personal card bonus in February 2023.  You can't apply for a new card until after those dates. So in my case, I cannot apply for another a Southwest Performance Business credit card until January 12th 2025 and I can't apply for another Southwest personal credit card until February 9th 2025.
2. You earn 10,000 points on January 1st if you hold a Southwest Credit Card. These points are not valid for flights, but do count towards the companion pass.
3. You can only hold ONE personal Southwest credit card at a time and you need to allow 30 days between closing the card you have and applying for another one. So now would be the right time to close your personal Southwest credit card if you plan to apply for another one in November. You can hold more than one Southwest Business credit card at a time so that's not an issue.
4. Check your 5/24 status. Chase will only approve you for 5 credit cards every 24 months so confirm that you will eligible for a Southwest personal credit card. The business cards do not count towards 5/24.

Step #1 Towards Earning Your Southwest Companion Pass For 2025-26

Make sure you do these steps so you are ready to hit the ground running in November to earn that pass. If you would like FREE coaching help, sign up to be one of the 25 people I am going to help earn the companion pass.

The Southwest 85,000 Point Bonus: A Potential Pitfall for Companion Pass Seekers

Chase just announced the new Southwest personal credit card bonus offer and it's a whopping 85,000 bonus points! Wow!
This is the highest offer we have seen in a long time.
  • $3,000 minimum spend
  • $69 annual fee
  • 85,000 bonus points
What can you buy for 85,000 Southwest points? A lot. Take a look at the points you would need for this one way flight from San Diego to New Orleans in November. You could go to New Orleans six times.

And how about just 3,000 points to travel from San Diego to San Francisco. Well, you could make that trip, uh, a lot.

You might be wondering, "How could 85,000 Southwest Rapid Rewards points possibly be bad?" It's not about the number of points, but the timing of the Southwest credit card offer. This lucrative deal ends on October 9th, creating a tight window for those aiming to earn the coveted Southwest Companion Pass for 2025-2026.

Why the Southwest Companion Pass is the Ultimate Travel Hack

  1. The Southwest Companion Pass is arguably the best travel perk in the airline industry.
  2. It offers BOGO (Buy One Get One) flights for up to two years.
  3. Valid for travel anywhere Southwest Airlines flies.
  4. Use your Rapid Rewards points to book your flight and add a companion for FREE.
  5. Southwest's new online tool allows you to change your designated companion up to three times per calendar year.

The Hidden Catch in the 85,000 Bonus Offer

While the bonus seems attractive, here's why it could be problematic for Companion Pass aspirants:

  1. You have three months from card application to reach the $3,000 minimum spend.
  2. Once you hit this threshold, it triggers the bonus point award.
  3. To earn the Companion Pass for 2025-2026, you must reach the $3,000 spend:
    • After January 1st, 2025, OR
    • After your credit card statement closes for 2024 (typically mid to late December)

The #1 Mistake in Companion Pass Strategy

Many eager travelers make this critical error: reaching the minimum spend too early. This can trigger the bonus in 2024 instead of 2025, potentially:

  • Costing you the Companion Pass entirely
  • Reducing your pass benefits by an entire year

It's a significant setback in your travel hacking journey!

Navigating the Timing Challenge

While the timing is tricky, it's not impossible. However, you may need expert guidance to navigate this credit card reward strategy successfully. Consider joining a Travel Coaching Program for personalized advice.

My goal is to help 25 people, including myself, earn the Southwest Companion Pass for 2025-2026. With the right strategy, you could be flying 2-for-1 for two full years!

Remember: Timing is everything when it comes to maximizing your Southwest Rapid Rewards and earning the Companion Pass. Don't let a hasty decision cost you thousands in potential travel savings!

How To Hack Southwest Airlines Flights For Less

One of the benefits of the relatively new fare class Wanna Get Away Plus at Southwest Airlines is the ability to change your flight day of for FREE. It's called the FREE day of standby change.

How To Hack Southwest Airlines Flights For Less

Saavy travelers have figured out that "day of" means 12:01am.
So theoretically, you can book a cheaper flight and then change your flight the night before at midnight to the flight you really want.

This hack may only cost you $20 per ticket or just a handful of points and you could save up to $50 per ticket or thousands of points.

This hack means you don't have to hope that you qualify for a FREE change due to weather or a schedule change.

How To Hack Southwest Airlines Flights For Less

The only catch with this hack is that there needs to be a seat available on the flight and you may get a lousy boarding position. If you do get a lousy boarding position, you can try using an upgrade boarding from your Southwest Priority credit card or your Southwest Performance Business credit card. Both come with 4 upgraded boardings per year.

If you don't have a Southwest Airlines credit card yet, you can use my referral link here to apply. However, if you are interested in earning the Southwest Companion Pass for 2025-26, sign up for my Travel Coaching Program first. It's affordable and personal to your travel goals. And I'm challenging myself to help 25 people earn the pass this January. Don't wait, there are only a few spots left!

Is The Southwest Companion Pass Next On The Chopping Block?

With all the changes Southwest Airlines is making next year like reserved seats, it makes me wonder if the Southwest Companion Pass is on the chopping block?

No one has mentioned anything yet, I'm just thinking out loud here. And wondering if this January may be the last time we can earn the companion pass for a full two years.

The Southwest Companion Pass is one of the best travel perks around since you can literally BOGO on any Southwest Airlines flight for up to two years. All you pay is $5.60 in taxes for the flight.

You can change your companion three times in a calendar year and your companion can be a family member, neighbor, friend or anyone else you would like to fly with you. They must fly with you on the same flight.

Is The Southwest Companion Pass Next On The Chopping Block?

The pass has saved me thousands of dollars. We have used it to fly to the East Coast dozens of times to places like Washington DC, New York, Florida, Nashville, Boston, Baltimore. We have flown to Cabo San Lucas, Cuba, Costa Rica, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas, Hawaii and so many more places.

Usually, you get the pass by earning 135,000 points in a single calendar year, but there are hacks to do this faster and way easier. I teach these hacks in my travel coaching program.

Is The Southwest Companion Pass Next On The Chopping Block?

The new cohort launches in September which is the perfect time to lay the groundwork for earning the Southwest Companion Pass for 2025-26. That's two years of BOGO flights!

In honor of 2025, my goal is to help 25 people earn the Southwest Companion Pass this January just in case this is the last chance. Consider joining this cohort if you are planning to travel to Hawaii or Disney or Costa Rica in the next two years. Enroll now in the Travel Coaching Program. The cohort launches Sept. 15th!
