5 Reasons Why You Might Want To Visit Tahiti Instead Of Hawaii

Why You Might Want To Spend Some Time on Tahiti Island
Most people stop in Tahiti for a few hours or maybe a night en route to the more popular Moorea or Bora Bora. But recently I spent a week on the big island and loved it.
I'll share some of the things we enjoyed, but first, some pros to staying on the big island. The most important is affordability.
The Airbnb's are cheaper, we are talking $100 per night cheaper which adds up quickly. Food is cheaper because there are just more options. Tours are cheaper because again more options and less tourists.

So what did we find to do?
1. Well, the most obvious is taking a boat out to see the famous surf wave at Teahupoo. Totally worth it! In fact, it's wild to be sitting on a boat with the surfers next to you riding one of the most famous waves in the world.
Only once did we worry about taking a wave ourselves.
We booked a 4-hour tour through Teahupoo Excursions. Michael and his crew were fabulous. We spent about an hour at the wave and then headed to the southern tip of Tahiti Iti, past the end of the road. They maneuvered the boat through a canal into the jungle where we disembarked and swam across the river. The guide led us on a short walk through the jungle to a beautiful grotto inside a lava tube for a short swim.
When we returned to the boat, the crew served chips and a very homemade cocktail that you just drink and don't ask what inside. It was delicious by the way.
The next few sights can be done over a few days or in one long day as a driving loop around the island.
2. Black Sand Beach at Taharuu - probably one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The current is strong and the rocks are plentiful so watch your feet. Be sure to check out the eels in the lagoon.
3. Grotto de Maraa - giant cave formed by a lava tube. No swimming, but beautiful photo spot. FREE admission.
4. Water Garden of Vaipahi - beautiful botanical garden that can provide the perfect picnic spot. Watch out for the chickens though who may want to share. your food. FREE admission and bathrooms available.

5. Arapaho Blowhole - one of the only blowholes in the world that spits out compressed air instead of water.
6. Waterfalls at Tiarei - there are actually three waterfalls here. The first is a short walk from the parking lot. The others are a 20 minute walk from the parking lot. No swimming, but the view is meditative.
7. Point Venus - the best spot on the island to view the sunset. It also features calm waters perfect for swimming, a lovely beach and volleyball courts.
We chose to do all of these stops as a one day self driving tour. We started the day around 11am and returned home by 7:30pm so it's a full day. If you prefer a guide or don't have a car, I recommend Lydia. Let her know I sent you.

Other notable things to see and do on the island of Tahiti:
8. Downtown Papeete - This is a half day walking tour that you can do on your own. Check out the indoor street market in Papeete, the cathedral, botanical gardens and the presidential palace.
10. Fun swimming snorkeling beach - We spent plenty of afternoons at this great beach at highway marker PK18. There are bathrooms available and plenty of free parking. It's also a great place to see the sunset. Be sure to check out the bakery Le Fournil Hautbois which is the best on the island.
We completely enjoyed our time on the island of Tahiti. In my next post, I'll share what we did during our 10 days in Moorea. If you would like help planning your bucket list trip to French Polynesia, reach out to me. I'll help you use points and miles to make this amazing trip affordable.

How I Booked Overwater Bungalows and Flights In Tahiti for $140
they decided on Tahiti. I was a bit surprised since my first thought was that’s where you honeymoon. But I was game. And they added, we would love to stay in those over the water bungalows. Makes sense!
So how do you get a family of 5 an almost FREE trip to Tahiti? It takes a lot of planning and time. I wanted to walk you through my process so you can see the strategy in action.
And I need to mention that if you are looking for help planning your next trip, I just launched the second cohort of my Travel Coaching Program. There are still a few spots open. And right now, I am donating 15% of all the proceeds to the Israel Emergency Fund.
But I'll share my process here so if you want to do it on your own, you can. Because my goal is that everyone can travel for almost FREE and enjoy those priceless experiences.
I start with research:
- Who flies to Tahiti
- Which islands should we visit
- What is there to do there
- Do we need a car
- Where will we stay
After doing the research, I decided for this trip:
- We should fly American Airlines - 70,000-80,000 miles per round trip
- We will visit Tahiti and Moorea - we can take a short ferry between these islands.
- We will need a car on both islands
- Besides the OWB, seems to be most cost effective for our family of 5 to stay in Airbnb
Now this is the way, we travel, but you might make different choices for your family. Now the fun part, earning all the points. For this trip, we will need approximately:
- 400,000 American Airlines miles for 5 r/t tickets
- 299,000 Chase Ultimate Reward points for 2 nights in an OWB bungalow and a garden room (we need two rooms for 5 people)
- Capital One points to erase the Airbnb, rental cars and tours
It sounds like a lot, but let’s break it down:
- Barclays American Aviator bonus offer 70,000 miles for $99 annual fee and one purchase - my partner and I each opened one of these
- Chase Ink Business Preferred bonus offer 100,000 Ultimate Rewards for a $95 annual fee and $8,000 minimum spend - my partner and I each opened one of these
- Several friends opened the Chase Ink Business Preferred using my referral link - bonus 40,000 Chase Ultimate Reward points for each one
- American Airlines Online Shopping portal
- Chase Ultimate Rewards Shopping portal
- Capital One points using my partners Capital One Venture X card and my new Capital One Venture X bonus.
So what did all of this get us:
- 240,000 American Airlines miles netted 3 round trip flights
- 128,000 Chase Ultimate Reward points netted 2 round trip flights
- 299,000 Chase Ultimate Reward points netted 2 nights in the OWB and 2 nights in the garden room
- 74,000 Capital One points netted 3.5 days in the Airbnb
So right now, I estimate the amount I saved using points and miles at approximately $11,000. Pretty good. I have spent $400 on annual fees and $340 on taxes, fees.
Between now and the actual trip, I will continue to earn Capital One points so I can erase the Airbnb, tours and rental cars.
And when I’m relaxing on the beach in Tahiti, I’ll enjoy it just a bit more because I didn’t spend an arm and a leg to have this dream vacation.

Unlocking the Future of Travel: Mastering Your Dream Vacation with AI Planning Tools
AI or artificial intelligence is changing just about everything we do. It's a fantastic tool and we can use it to unlock the future of travel too.
A new study conducted on behalf of GuideGeek by Southpaw Insights indicate that an overwhelming majority of us, in fact, 63% of those surveyed have had a negative experience while planning a past vacation. Of those, a quarter said that they had ultimately regretted their choice of destination.
Oh no. If you are going to spend points or miles or cash, eek, you should enjoy the trip.
So how can AI help make planning easier and help you pick the best destination for your next vacation. Here are the top four ways I'm using AI right now to plan my next vacation.
1. Intelligent Recommendations: AI-powered travel platforms can analyze your preferences, past travel patterns and online behavior to provide personalized recommendations for destinations, accommodations, attractions and activities that align with your interests.
For example, I asked Chat GPT for a recommendation of a warm, affordable destination with lots of outdoor activities and here's what it found.
4. Language Translation and Assistance: AI powered translation tools can help bridge this gap by providing real time translation services, enabling you to communicate effectively with locals. Examples include apps like iTranslate and Google Translate. Google Translate is awesome because you can use your camera to translate signs, menus and more.
I'll keep updating this post as more tools come online.

Secret Flights For Big Savings!
Fifth freedom flights are the ultimate secret in air travel, according to CBS Travel Reporter Peter Greenberg, The Travel Detective. What is a fifth freedom flight? It is a route that a carrier flies outside of its home country. Fifth freedom flights must have pick up rights in that country. For example, you may fly Air New Zealand between JFK and London without ever touching ground in New Zealand, but even though Qantas flies daily from JFK to London, you can't book that flight because the airline doesn't have pick up rights.
